Let's remove the issues! Should you rent a car or not in Costa Rica? Well about 70% of our guests do and all come back safe and smiling (well almost all except for those who got nagged to death for not asking directions). But about those car rental agencies?
We like the idea that the paper you sign for with a car rental company has the price you will pay for. There are plenty of car rental agencies to choose from in Costa Rica - we have used most of them. Our experiences have varied from a perfect 10 to "not what we expected".
Toyota car Rental (a division of the Toyota main dealer in Costa Rica) has yielded excellent guest experiences and consistently competitive prices. Most importantly if they say they will bring the car at 8am, it is there. If we quote you a car model or a car year, that is the model you get not "or similar". None of our guests have to wait at rental counters or try to muddle their way through a rental discussion in Spanish. We insist our car agency is reliable, delivers your car to the Pura Vida breakfast table (or wherever we have agreed to deliver it) and won't argue with you about normal wear and tear when you turn the car in. These are the basics of car rentals to us. We have worked with Toyota since 1983. They know us and we know them - should there be even the slightest issue we know how to work together to resolve it.

A 2WD FAVORITE, THE 4 DOOR YARISFor buzzing around town or a quick haul to the beach, try the economical Toyota Yaris 2WD. Great trunk space for an economy car too. Has automatic and manual option to save a few dollars a day. Zippy and economical.
THE NEWEST DAIHATSU TERRIOS BEGO 4WD - GO ANYWHERE IN COSTA RICA: (Daihatsu is owned by Toyota), an excellent compact all wheel drive with good ground clearance and great gas mileage. Yes and a decent luggage space for 4 people if you bring soft sided luggage. We have rented this many times - the perfect on and off roader for Costa Rican roads. Take a manual transmission and save a few dollars a day or order the automatic and take the driving easy. This is our most popular rental. THE LATEST MID SIZE TOYOTA RAV4 4WD:A mid sized, manual or automatic. Very zippy, decent gas mileage and a great 4WD for those roads across the top of Arenal and Monteverde. A bit more space than the Terrios Bego for those taller folks and a bit more luggage room for 5 if you use soft sided luggage.
THE TOYOTA FORTUNER 4WD FULL SIZE:Another all time 4WD - the big diesel engine is both clean emissions, quiet and very economical. Full size with extra seats. Our last trip to the Zona Sur in a borrowed Fortuner was done on 1 gas tank going down. Great space, extra seats in the trunk area and fits 4 to 5 comfortably with plenty of luggage. NOTE: despite what other car companies may say, we do not advise 6 or 7 persons in these full size SUV's as there will be no space for your luggage. THE TOYOTA LAND CRUISER PRADO 4WD FULL SIZE:A little bit bigger than the Fortuner though not by much in interior space and not really worth the extra premium you'd pay for the Prado. NOTE: despite what other car companies may say, we do not advise 6 or 7 persons in these full size SUV's as there will be no space for your luggage. When you have the need to transport a small army of kids or relatives, the Toyota Hiace is the best deal - for about the same price as the Fortuner. It is however 2WD so ask us about your route and we can advise how it will work. Also there is no automatic option for this van.
THE TOYOTA SEQUOIA:Big and expensive but quite nice eh? In addition, for those aspiring rock stars, overpaid wall street bankers or the supremely paranoid, there are a small compliment of bullet proof vehicles at extra cost.
